Using tourism to fight unemployment, Amachree urges the government

The owner of the Brooklyn Hotel Group and former president of the Association of Tourism Professionals of Nigeria (ATPN), Chief Mike Amachree, called on the various levels of government of the country to use tourism to combat the unemployment in the country. He said tourism is the largest employer on the planet and that by investing in and paying more attention to tourism, the industry could create jobs and reduce unemployment.

Amachree was speaking at the AGA of the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria. Recently, where he was conferred with the honor of Nigeria's father of tourism.

Speaking why the FTAN decided to confer the honor of Nigeria's father of tourism on Amachree, FTAN chairman, Alhaji Saleh Rabo, said that Amachree had been in the industry of Tourism for over 55 years and has contributed enormously to the development of tourism in the country.

He said that Amachree was among the founders of FTAN and ha He did a lot for the country as part of the promotion and advocacy for the development of the industry.

Among the achievements of Amachree: the first national president of the Association of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria (ATPN) in 1990; a director of the Nigeria Tourism Board (now NTDC) in 1991; Nigerian representative at the United Nations Commission for Africa Conference of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in 1992 in Ghana; organized the first Abuja Carnival in 1990 when General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd) was the head of state.

At the FTAN AGM, Alhaji Saleh Rabo called for the injection of funds into the Nigerian tourism industry.

"Essentially, we want to engage some national and international funding organizations to obtain subsidies or investment funds, which is what Nigeria's agricultural sector benefits from.

"Accordingly, we plan to involve relevant organizations, including the Bank of Industry (BOI) and the Nigeria Export Promotion Board (NEPC) to support FTAN members. "

Speaking of FTAN's activities in the past year, Rabo said:" Up to now, we have achieved some of the milestones we have supported in our campaigns and we are still making considerable efforts to achieve even more of our strategic plans. Until now, we have obtained an appropriate national secretariat for the FTAN and we have since improved the structures and processes of the functions and administration of the secretariat
