After their first defeat in 29 games, the United States concluded their two-game European swing with a win in Alicante.

The US women's national team recovered from Saturday's loss to France with a friendly 1-0 win over Spain on Tuesday.

The United States fell 3-1 in France on Saturday, the first defeat of Jill Ellis' team in a year and a half.

But the Americans performed better against Spain in Alicante and substitute in the second half, Christen Press, scored the only goal of the match with a superb solo effort.

Publisher's choice

Just after returning from the bench after halftime break, Press opened the scoring with brilliant individual skill.

The 30-year-old recovered the ball in her own half and showed her frantic pace by beating two defenders and finishing in front of goalkeeper Sandra Panos.

The next step for the United States is the SheBelieves Cup, where Ellis's team will face Japan, England and Brazil in late February and early March.

The United States are part of Group F alongside Sweden, Thailand and Chile for this summer's World Cup in France.
