UTAG-UG reschedules strike for January 2022 academic year

The University of Ghana Faculty Association (UTAG), a branch of the University of Ghana, said the October 8 strike has been postponed until January of next year, when the academic calendar is expected to begin .

This recent development comes after an emergency meeting held on Friday to discuss and vote on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOA) signed by the UTAG negotiating team and government officials as part of the mandate given to the first. to negotiate for better conditions. of service with the latter.

The MoU was signed on October 6, 2021.

During the meeting, UTAG-UG voted against said amount of USD 1,600 payable by 2024 which has been agreed in the MOA by Negotiation Team and accepted by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of UTAG for research allowance.

In a letter to UTAG National President Prof. Solomon Nunoo signed by UG Branch President Dr Samuel Nkumbaan, UTAG-UG also noted that it agreed that “Instead of the amount of 1600 USD, which the negotiating team negotiated and signed with the government, members are entitled and will only accept the cedi equivalent of $2,084, which represents the salary value at the entry point of teachers in 2013. ”

According to the Association, it would only reverse its decision if the government had to pay the required cedi equivalent of $ 2,084.

Negotiations on the market bonus and base salary have, however, been suspended due to the labor market survey which was due to be published by December of this year.

But UTAG-UG agreed that the National Executive Committee negotiating team should be reconstituted to take advantage of the expertise of selected members in public schools.

According to the Association, this “would ensure professional discussions during negotiations and quality results beneficial to UTAG members”.
