The Ghana University Teachers Association (UTAG) called on its members to resume the strike on Friday October 8 due to poor conditions of service.

This was contained in a press release given to its members on Tuesday, October 5, 2021.

According to said press release, the decision was taken on Friday, October 1, 2021.

UTAG insists the decision has become necessary as negotiations with the government are deadlocked a month after suspending the previous strike.

“Following the signing of the memorandum of understanding with the employer to complete negotiations on the conditions of service of university professors within one (1) month by resolving all outstanding issues, which have served as the basis for the suspension of the strike, it is sad to report that the one-month moratorium has passed and that the negotiations have almost reached an impasse.

UTAG also added that “Unfortunately, during the one-month moratorium, the employer never changed its position even though UTAG made a number of concessions”.

He thus concluded that “For this reason, the National Executive Committee of UTAG, at its meeting on October 1, 2021, decided that if the employer’s position remains unchanged by Friday October 8, 2021, Members are expected to resume the suspension of teaching and activities until further notice.

About the previous strike

UTAG members had been on strike since early August 2021 because they wanted the government to restore the terms of service agreed to in 2012 which they said were much better than the current situation.

The 2012 Single Spine package grants entry-level speakers a salary of $ 2,084, while the current level places speaker salaries around $ 900.

The UTAG strike seriously affected academic work and some non-academic work on the various tertiary campuses.

The High Court’s Division of Labor, 1 advised the National Labor Commission (NLC) and UTAG to settle the deadlock on their amicable industrial action .

UTAG had previously indicated that he would only completely cancel his strike after successful negotiations with the government and the NLC.
