MADISON, WIS. (WMTV) – Undergraduate students from UW-Madison were among the 21 teams to see whose designs for a transport module would make the fastest ride on a test track for the SpaceX Hyperloop competition.
The Badgerloop team participated in California on July 21st at the 4th annual SpaceX Hyperloop competition.
Students built a drop-shaped pod. Despite the competition that included teams of graduate students working full time on their modules, Badgerloop impressed the judges with ingenuity and perseverance.
"We are proud because we worked hard to build the best pod possible with the time we had and the staff we had," said Emma Krueger, director of operations at Badgerloop. "The competition was tough and we tried to make the most of our time with our advisors and our responsible engineers."
The direct-drive motor that propels the Badgerloop carrycot has a maximum speed of 7,000 rpm and its braking system must produce a deceleration of nearly 3,000s. That's about a third of the force a fighter pilot faces in a steep vertical dive, enough to silence many civilians.
Unfortunately, the Badgerloop students had a last-minute problem with the nacelle brake system air compressor, which prevented the team from obtaining a test track clearance.
The fastest hyperloop pod is at the Technical University of Munich. He reached a top speed of 288 mph. Three other teams were also able to use the test track: Delft Hyperloop, EPFL Hyperloop and Swissloop.
The Badgerloop team is already looking forward to the 2020 competition.
"One member joked that he learned more this week than he did throughout his university career," says Krueger. "While this is not technically true, our engineers and non-engineers are learning and developing from experiences like this."
