Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has said the surest way to eradicate the dreaded coronavirus pandemic is through vaccination.

To this end, he appealed to all people to get vaccinated.

“Vaccines are the best way to end the fight against COVID-19, you need to get vaccinated as soon as possible,” the two-time Ghanaian leader said in a tweet on Sunday.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has resumed vaccination of Ghanaians, aged 18 and over, with the additional doses of AstraZeneca vaccines received by the country on Friday, September 24.

The COVAX facility’s vaccine deployment began the country’s mass immunization exercise in March. But the shortage of supplies from the Serum Institute of India forced the exercise to stop.

On Tuesday, August 31, those who had not yet received their second dose began receiving it after an additional 249,000 doses were received as part of the COVAX facility.

It ended on Saturday September 4th.

“People 18 years of age or older who have never received a vaccine or who have only received a single dose of AstraZeneca should participate in this exercise,” the Service said in a statement Thursday (September 23).

“It is advisable for all eligible people to bring a valid photo ID card when going to a designated center in their respective regions for vaccination,” said the statement signed by the Director General of the Service, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye.

“People due for the 2nd dose of AstraZeneca should preferably send the identity card presented for the 1st dose as well as their COVID-19 vaccination card. “

So far, 1,643,172 vaccines have been administered across the country. Of these, 1,026,652 received their first dose of one of the AstraZeneca, Sputnik-V or Johnson & Johnson vaccines.

Seven hundred and seventy-seven thousand seven hundred and fifty (777,750) were fully immunized because they received both doses. Moderna vaccines received from the United States have yet to be administered.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said the goal was to vaccinate 20 million people by the end of the year.
