The UN agency recently released a list of the top 10 threats to global health for 2019, namely air pollution, obesity and antibiotic resistance. This is the first time that vaccine hesitancy has been listed by the UN agency as one of the top ten health threats in the world.
"Vaccination is one of the most cost-effective ways to avoid the disease. It currently prevents 2 to 3 million deaths a year and 1.5 million more could be avoided if the worldwide coverage of vaccination improves, "the report says.
In India, the lack of awareness and information badociated with the fear of adverse events after vaccination are considered as the main reasons why children do not get vaccinated. According to government estimates, about 65% of children do not benefit from immunization coverage. Between 2014 and 2018, the annual growth rate of vaccination in India increased from 1% to 4%.
