VANCOUVER – A second case of measles has been confirmed in Vancouver.
Vancouver Coastal Health indicates that the infected person is a minor and has contracted the disease locally, while the first case was contracted abroad.
The health authority warned in a press release that measles is a highly contagious disease that is spread by air and that close contact is not necessary for transmission.
He says the disease can also be spread by sharing food, drinks or cigarettes or by kissing an infected person.
Symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose and red eyes, followed a few days later by a rash that starts on the face and spreads to the chest.
The authorities note that two doses of measles vaccine are 99% effective in the prevention of measles and that most cases now occur in persons born after 1970 who have received no dose or a single dose of the vaccine.
