FRance scrambled to win his third tournament last night, thanks to a spectacular penalty late in the game against a Nigerian of 10 women.
The 1-0 win was far from convincing and almost total disaster for Wendie Renard, who pursued her goal in the match against Norway by missing her penalty kick. Fortunately for her, the Nigerian goalkeeper broke away from his line too quickly, giving Fox a second chance to seal the win.
Corinne Deacon promised changes this match and she kept her word by replacing four players having started against Norway, including Eugenie Le Sommer, who was likely to be suspended.
Even if the head coach of France was certain that his less experienced players were up to the challenge, the first period foreshadowed the opposite. Viviane Asseyi, who started her first World Cup game, misinterpreted the heats and pbades, which is a weak link in the team that seems to have lost the flow that she showed in her first match.
With their opponents, France was not able to score at once in the first hour, their disjointed opportunities being mainly related to stopped games. That did not dampen the atmosphere at Roazhon Park, however, with an electrifying crowd right from the start.
However, it was Nigeria that had one of the most substantial chances of the half in the first four minutes, when his captain, Desire Oparanozie, almost has a head on a right corner.
Nigeria's ability to quickly put the ball out of the field during the counterattack was a disturbing sight for French fans, especially in the first half. But the crowd could find solace in their improper final pbad and in the ensuing closure of Renard before a real danger materializes.
The attack from France was all wrong, however. Cascarino's chance in the 53rd minute summed it up, with Gauvin and Henry involved in a confusion of stray pbades and shots that ultimately allowed the ball to fall to Cascarino's feet, before she launched her shot in the nets.
In the 63rd minute, Deacon finally had enough and presented Le Sommer and Kadidiatou Diani. The result was an almost immediate tempo change, with Gauvin finally making the first goal of the match and Diani offering a sublime center at Thiney in the penalty area a few minutes later.
The penalty would be their savior though. Ngozi Ebere's tackle on Asseyi in the box was deemed illegal after consulting the VAR. The Nigerian defender received her second yellow and the penalty inflicted. However, Renard's penalty kick was too wide, cutting the post out of bounds.
But in another case, Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie was considered out of his goal line and the penalty was taken. This time, the French veteran should not miss the goal, placing it in the left corner of the goalkeeper in the 79th minute. His pensive gaze in the sky, after the prayer, was a spectacle of his relief – and the rest of France.
