Southern Nigeria Governors’ Forum Chairman and Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu said Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS requested amendments to the National Assembly on controversial value-added tax will be overturned in the State House of Assemblies.

Governor Akeredolu who said the law does not give the federal government the power to collect VAT and share it with other states, adding that VAT should be the responsibility of the state.

“This is the position of the law. The request to modify the FIRS is a confirmation that it does not have the power. The amendment will be dead on arrival. Why seek an amendment to a constitution when the provision is so clear. Akeredolu explained.

The governor spoke on “Arise TV Sunday Talk Show” hosted by Reuben Abati.

The governor insisted that if the federal government were to collect VAT for the states, it could only get a percentage that the federal government could decide to share to the FAAC.

“You can only collect VAT on behalf of states and give them their money. You can only take a percentage there to help us collect the money.
