Veep, chief justice commemorates World Leprosy Day

Vice President was joined by Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo and President of Lepers Aid Ghana to commemorate World Leprosy Day 2019 at the Weija Leprosarium in Accra.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is also the boss of the "healed" lepers, called for the attention and care of people living with leprosy.

He also urged people to stop discriminating against people living with the disease.

"Discriminating people who have suffered from leprosy is not pious and therefore we should all get rid of it" it's noted.

The last Sunday in January of each year is dedicated to World Leprosy Day to raise public awareness of the disease, to celebrate those affected and to mobilize support for the fight against leprosy.

Dr. Bawumia also indicated that the government was on track to reach the zero goal of infection of leprosy in children and that it would do its utmost by providing the necessary resources to l & # 39; reach.

"The government will support the various leproses to ensure that people with leprosy are protected and live meaningful lives," he added. indicated.

At the commemoration of 2019, he is also committed to joining the Lepers Help Committee to raise more funds for their activities.

The theme of this year's celebration was "Ending Discrimination, Stigma and Prejudice".

Judge Sophia Akufo said that people with the disease should not to be forced to leave their home to live in a distant establishment and should not be disowned by their family members and society.

Father Andrew Campbell, President of Lepers Aid Ghana, thanked the Vice President and many others other philanthropists who, over the years, have shown care, interest and support for lepers in Ghana.
