Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia in a coup with council members
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia joined Wednesday the Muslim faithful of the Konongo Central Mosque for prayers as part of his national Ramadan tour. Earlier in the day, he performed Zuhr prayers at the Ahmadiyya Mosque in Asafo, Kumasi, and the Ejisu Central Mosque.
Alhaji Mahamadou Mustapha, head of Konongo's municipal imam in Asante Akyem Central, described the vice-president's visit and worship at the Konongo Central Mosque as "very historic".
The secretary of the Council of Zongo Chiefs of the Central Municipality of Asante Akyem, Mr. Ade Adeoye, who spoke on behalf of the municipal leader's imam, said that such a High level visit to Asante Akyem Zongo had not occurred for over 100 years.
"Since the creation of this Zongo, more than 100 years ago, from the Gold Coast to the time of Kwame Nkrumah, we have never been visited by a president or a vice president.
Some of us are third and fourth generation inhabitants of Asante Akyem Zongo and we have never seen this before.
This is very very historic, "said the head of the municipality's imam, quoted by the vice president's office.
Describing Asante Akyem Central Zongo as the second most important of the Ashanti region, Alhaji Mustapha is delighted that his first distinguished visitor is not an ordinary person but a Muslim brother.

"What is even more remarkable in this visit, is that the visitor is not just anyone, but our brother in faith who came to visit us.
We know that your schedule is busy, but you still have time to visit us.
We are delighted and grateful for your visit, "said Mustapha Alhaji.
Alhaji Mustapha also praised the initiatives of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo aimed at improving the living conditions in Zongos across the country, noting that it was the first time that programs and policies such as the Fund's Zongo development were specifically targeted at Zongo communities.
Konongo Zongo's Chief Imam praised Vice President Bawumia for his constant efforts to gain knowledge among Zongo's youth, saying that this was in line with the Prophet Muhammad's recommendation to all Muslims seek knowledge wherever it is.
