Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro claims to have put an end to an attempted coup and has pledged to punish the people involved.

Earlier, the leader of the opposition, Juan Guaido, had called for an armed uprising, the most serious challenge ever to the president's power.

Violent street fighting erupted in parts of Caracas as government vehicles moved at full speed.
