Venom 2 ignores the perfect connection between Carnage and the MCU’s Spider-Man. Sony’s Spider-Man spinoff has always had an uncertain relationship with the MCU’s own Spider-Man movies. It inspired other people to violence, and soon riots broke out in the city, as the worst aspects of human nature were seemingly on display. But, while Shriek was easily Carnage’s most important ally, he was also assisted by the Doppelganger Spider.

Created in the six-issue mini-series titled Infinity war, the Doppelganger Spider was an evil and almost insane duplicate of the Wall Crawler. He possessed all of Spider-Man’s powers, but was turning in a much more violent direction; for example, the webs of the Doppelganger Spider are barbed wire, which means you really don’t want to be caught in a stream of its strap. The creature is monstrous and inhuman, easily differentiated from Spider-Man due to its slave jaws and six arms. It wasn’t just thrown in Maximum Carnage on a whim, but rather to emphasize the idea that everyone’s dark side had been unleashed by Carnage, as it symbolized a bloodthirsty version of Spider-Man himself.

Venom 2 is expected to feature Naomie Harris as Shriek, but the Doppelganger Spider – another crucial member of the Carnage gang – is sadly absent. That’s somewhat of a shame, as it would be interesting to see this monster come to life on the big screen, and its presence would help tie the spinoff a bit more closely to the MCU – especially if the Doppelganger Spider was clearly a twisted version of Spider. -Man of Tom Holland.
