Verizon and South Korean companies claim victory in 5G race

The American company Verizon Communications claims its bragging rights in the global race to entrust the 5G mobile phone technology to consumers.

The company claims that it is the first in the world to have a 5G network and a phone capable of using it.

But the affirmation is not without controversy. South Korean media reports that suppliers in their country have defeated Verizon.

Verizon announced Wednesday that its next-generation network is now available in parts of Chicago and Minneapolis.

The only problem is that customers need a particular model of Motorola phone to use it.

Verizon originally planned to launch the 5G service next Thursday. But the launch date was rushed after South Korean telecommunications companies announced that they would present their own 5G services on Friday.

CEO Hans Vestberg said his company was the winner of the race to make 5G a reality for consumers.

He added that Verizon was planning to expand its network to 30 US cities by the end of the year.

But in South Korea, three telecommunications companies say they launched their 5G services Wednesday night, and local media say the launch took place two hours ahead of Verizon, making it the world's first.

For the moment, however, services are only available for celebrities, top athletes and a selected group of other users from South Korea. Companies say the networks will be available to the general public starting Friday, as planned.
