Verizon begins deploying its 5G mobile network in parts of Chicago and Minneapolis

Verizon today announced the official deployment of its 5G mobile service in parts of Chicago and Minneapolis, which are the first two of 30 cities it plans to roll out its 5G wireless network this year. The unexpected launch took place a week earlier than the date originally announced by the company. Customers can expect average download speeds of up to 450 Mbps and peak speeds of up to about 1 Gbps.

To use Verizon's 5G network, customers will need a compatible 5G phone. For now, this only concerns the Moto Z3 launched last summer, badociated with Moto Mod 5G, available today. Using the 5G network will also cost customers an additional $ 10 per month. Verizon will support 5G technology on the new Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, which is scheduled to launch in the "first half of 2019." (that is, it is expected to arrive in the next two months.)

Today's launch is different than the previous deployment of Verizon's 5G home network in four cities last year. While these networks operate at the TF 5G standard, Verizon's 5G wireless technology uses the "real" 5G NR standard for cellular networks.

Even if you are in Chicago or Minneapolis, the launch remains extremely limited. Coverage covers the entire downtown core and some landmarks, such as the American Bank of Minneapolis stadium and the Gold Coast, Chicago, River North and Old Town districts.
