Veterinarian will begin free anti-rabies vaccination in Western Region

The Regional Office of Veterinary Services of the West announced that it had developed a new targeted and free vaccination strategy for dogs and cats in both regions, in order to bridge the gap that separates diseases of rabies.

The regions of the West and North West have 166,000 cats and dogs. In 2017, 14 232 people were vaccinated, or 8.6%, while 2018 registered 9 942 vaccinations representing 5.8% coverage.

Dr. Simon Gbene, Regional Director of Veterinary Services, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Takoradi that 85 percent immunization coverage over five years was needed continuously to control or eliminate the disease caused by rabies in cats and dogs rage.

He said the new strategy presented by Ms Joyce Domtwi, national director of service in partnership with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, is expected to last two weeks in all regions of the country.

In the metropolis, Kojokrom and the new Takoradi were selected for free vaccination because they top the list of communities with frequent bites.

Last year, the Region recorded 2,131 cases of dog bites with six deaths and between January and February of this year, 329 people reported dog bites with one death.

In addition, in 2017, 11 deaths out of 2,029 people were bitten by dogs.

Dr. Gbene stated that the disease does not suffer from rabies and is therefore a huge public health problem to avoid.

The Regional Director said that free vaccination would help the Service to at least improve somewhat the control of this threat to public health.
