In a new development that may have different meanings for different people, the Vatican leader, Pope Francis met with the leaders of Southern Sudan and ended up embracing literally in an apparent honor of their work.

Pope Francis, the head of the world Catholic Church, kissed the feet of South Sudanese leaders as they were performing a two-day spiritual retreat at the Vatican.

The South Sudanese delegation included former rebel leaders at war who clashed even after the country's separation from the largest Republic of Sudan.

According to the BBC, the pope told the South Sudanese delegation: "I ask you as a brother to remain in peace, I ask you with my heart, let's go ahead."

President Salva Kiir and his rival, former rebel leader Riek Machar, clashed in 2013, resulting in a civil war that claimed the lives of about 400,000 people.
