Former Chelsea midfielder, Michael Essien, paid tribute to his mother Aba Gyandoh for the crucial role she played in her first career in football.

according to in Essien, his mother encouraged him to join the national under-17 team as a schoolboy.

"When I was selected for the National Under-17 Team, I was in school at that time and my mother said it would be difficult, would you- you really going there? ", said Essien in an interview with FIFA TV.

"I think my answer was no, my mother sat me down and said, my son, you should go."

Essien represented his country at the 1999 FIFA U-17 World Championship, before appearing at the 2001 FIFA World Youth Championship.
