HANOI, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) – Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has asked the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, relevant agencies and local communities to take swift action to combat African swine fever in the near future. Vietnam, the Vietnam News Agency reported Friday.
The prime minister ordered the presidents of the provincial and municipal people's committees to give instructions and to treat all the affected areas in order to avoid new cases. Management committees must be created, with detailed tasks for each member to improve inspections and supervision.
Steering committees should closely monitor border gates and slaughterhouses and inform local people of preventive measures.
The Ministry of Agriculture is responsible for contacting international organizations and countries concerned to implement common measures to prevent the spread of the disease.
In Vietnam, ASF was discovered in the two northern provinces, Hung Yen and Thai Binh.
The Animal Health Department of Agriculture on Thursday instructed eight Vietnam laboratories to conduct free genetic tests for the APP.
Pham Van Dong, director of the department, said rapid and accurate genetic testing was an effective step in preventing and controlling the disease, as well as economic losses and limited environmental impacts.
According to the World Organization for Animal Health, nearly 1.1 million pigs have been slaughtered to prevent its spread, and African swine fever cases have been reported in 20 countries.
According to the organization, APP is a serious viral disease affecting domestic and wild pigs; and it can be transmitted by living or dead pigs, domestic or wild pigs and by products derived from pork. At present, there is no vaccine approved against ASF.
The ASF virus does not affect humans but causes in pigs and wild boars a haemorrhagic fever that is almost always fatal.
