Volkswagen I.D. R breaks the Nurburgring's electric record at more than 40 years – More

Volkswagen set a new lap record for electric vehicles at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, Romain Dumas setting a time of 6m05,336 seconds in the adapted adapted transmission. Prototype R Monday.

Dumas' lap is 40,564s faster than the previous Nurburgring record set by Peter Dumbreck in a NIO EP9 supercar in 2017.

The Nurburgring's electric record is the third title the ID R has taken in the last 12 months, after Dumas set a new total record, Pikes Peak, in June 2018 and then defeated three weeks later, the electric record of Goodwood Festival of Speed.

"Holding a record on the Nordschleife makes me incredibly proud," said Dumas.

"For me, it's the toughest and most challenging race track in the world, and I want to thank the Volkswagen Motorsport team for once again doing a fantastic job.

"The I.R.R was perfectly prepared for the Nordschleife and it was so much fun to experience the blazing acceleration and fast speeds in the turns."

The technical director of VW, Xavier Demaison, explained that the "evolved version" of the Id. R had an aerodynamic configuration "more strongly adapted to the highest speed possible than the maximum support".

"After many test runs on the simulator and on the race track, we adapted the IDD to the unique conditions of the Nordschleife, focusing primarily on chbadis tuning, energy management and the optimal choice of tires for the record attempt, "he continued.

Dumas visited the Nürburgring after participating in the Le Mans test day for the Duqueine Engineering LMP2 team last Sunday.
