VW broke the absolute record of the famous Pikes Peak race last year. Romain Dumas, double winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, beat Sebastien Loeb's reference time by 16 seconds.

The German brand has now turned to the electrical record around the Nordschleife, owned by Peter Dumbreck.

Dumbreck signed his fastest time in 6m45.90s driving a NIO EP9 supercar in 2017.

Stefan Bellof's long-standing record on the Nordschleife was overshadowed last year by VW's sister brand as part of its Tribute Tour for the 919 Hybrid Evo, an upgraded version of the 919 Hybrid LMP1 car. who won Le Mans and FIA World. Title of Endurance Champion three times in a row in 2015-17.

Sven Smeets, director of VW Motorsport, commented: "After the Pikes Peak record, the fastest time for electric cars on the Nürburgring Nordschleife is the next big challenge of the I.D. R.

"A lap record on the Nordschleife is an excellent reward for any car, whether it's a race car or a series car."

Identity R will again be driven by Dumas, also four-time winner of the Nürburgring 24 Hours with Porsche.

"The idea of driving I.D. R on the Nordschleife is already enough to give me goose bumps, "said Dumas.

"I know the track very well, but the IDD R will be a completely different challenge, with its extreme acceleration and tremendous speeds.

"I can not wait for the first tests, breaking the existing electric record will certainly not be a walk in the park."

VW Motorsport's technical director, François-Xavier Demaison, presented some of the changes that would be made to the Id. R to meet the requirements of the Nordschleife of 20.8 km (12.9 mi).

"First and foremost, we will change the aerodynamics of the I.D. R, in order to cope with the conditions on the Nordschleife, which differ greatly from those of Pikes Peak, "said Demaison.

"As part of our meticulous preparations for the record attempt, we will be conducting an intensive I.D.R. testing and development program at various racetracks in the spring."

VW said that the record attempt itself would take place in the summer, but no exact date has been specified.
