It took 20 years to break the record of the Goodwood Speed Festival. And it happened twice in the same weekend.
The new record holder is the Volkswagen ID R electric racecar. The vehicle, driven by driver Romain Dumas, broke the record by closing the 1.86 km (1.15 km) track at Goodwood in southern England in 41.18 seconds. Dumas then broke his own record the next day by finishing the track in 39.90 seconds.
The previous record of the famous hill climb was established in 1999 by Nick Heidfeld, who was driving a 780 hp McLaren-Mercedes MP4 / 13 with a combustion engine. Heidfeld completed the race in 41.6 seconds.
The Volkswagen ID R (and Dumas) is about to collapse at the latest to record at Nürburgring-Nordschleife and Pikes Peak. The R-ID set a new electric vehicle lap record at Nürburgring-Nordschleife, finishing the race in 6: 05.336 minutes. The previous record was set in 2017 by Peter Dumbreck, who drove a Nio electric vehicle.
The Volkswagen ID R has been modified to best suit the rise of Goodwood. A vehicle was equipped with a smaller battery, which allowed for reduced weight, and the power delivered was optimized for short sprinting. A drag reduction system designed for high-speed sections of the Nürburgring.
Why is all this important? This race car is a benchmark and flagship product of Volkswagen's EV platform.
Volkswagen presents its range of electric vehicles ID for several years. The company is preparing some for production, starting with ID.3. VW aims to sell 100,000 ID.3 vehicles each year.
The ID.3 sedan is the first model built on the new Modular Electric Drive Toolkit architecture, or MEB, from the automaker. Launched in 2016, MEB is a flexible modular system – a true matrix of common components – for the production of electric vehicles that, according to VW, makes it more efficient and more economical.
Others will soon follow. VW plans to have a portfolio of more than 20 fully electric models. The goal of the manufacturer is to sell 1 million electric vehicles per year by 2025.
