Volta GNAT on strike for "illegal deduction"

The Volta regional branch of the National Association of Teachers of Ghana (GNAT) would go on strike if the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Public Insurance Company (SIC) did not stop the "illegal deduction" of the salary of the members by August.

At a press conference held in Ho, Mr. Ayuba Aguda, Volta Regional Vice President, GNAT, stated that the Association was disappointed and frustrated by the GHG and CIS decision of Imposing an insurance policy on its members and deducting premiums without the consent of their members. repay the money on time.

"We wish to state unequivocally that by the end of the month of August 2019, there is no indication of shutdown and refund of the amounts deducted, we, GNAT Volta's leaders, can no longer restrict our members in any way. The Ghana Education Service and its ally, the public insurance company, must be held responsible for any industrial unrest, "he said.

Aguda said GNAT viewed the GHG and SIC actions as disrespectful to teachers and as "blatant evidence of arrogance" to them because the Labor Act, 2003, Act 651 stipulated that the consent of teachers should be requested before any deduction. ignored.

He added that the badociation had several times hired the director general of the GES and had also written a series of letters to the relevant authorities and stakeholders to put an end to the taxation and deduction, but that "all had turned a deaf ear and had not brought any positive fruit".

Mr. Aguda also stated that the position of members to fill out no exit form was non-negotiable and that any reimbursement should be made through the Comptroller and the Department of the General Accountant, because the members completed forms and did not receive or read any GHG and CIS policy documents. .

He explained that most of the members who filled out the form did not receive their money and that those who received it also received deductions against their right to choose.

"We view this directive as a flagrant deception and disrespect … We have not completed any forms, received or read any GHG / CIS policy documents. Why should we then fill out the exit form? Asked the regional vice president.

Mr. Aguda said that setting up an insurance policy for teachers was a New Patriotic Party (NPP) election promise in the 2016 general election, "to which the teacher he was not forced to pay an increased contribution ".
