Former President John Dramani Mahama
The leadership of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta region expressed its sincere and warm congratulations to former President John Dramani Mahama on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday.
In a congratulatory message signed by the regional party chairman, the Hon. The Gyapong Kwadzo Party said: "You have served your country well, your image is growing in importance nationally and internationally, and most importantly, Ghanaians yearn for your return."
The statement added that "the mbadive transformation of the country under your leadership gives the NDC the opportunity to badert itself as a major political pillar not only in Ghana but on the African continent".
He concluded with "The leadership of the Volta NDC party congratulates the ex-president Mahama for his sixtieth birthday".
Brief history of Mr. John Mahama
John Mahama was born on November 29, 1958 in Damango, capital of West Gonja District, a rich teacher, rice farmer and politician. His father, Emmanuel Adama Mahama, was the first member of the West Gonja Parliament and the Northern Regional Prime Minister, chaired by Ghana's first president, Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah.
Mahama was first elected to the Ghana Parliament in the 1996 elections to represent the
Constituency of Bole / Bamboi for a four-year term. In April 1997, Mahama was appointed Deputy Minister of Communications.
He was promoted to Minister of Communications in November 1998, a position he held until January 2001, when the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) transferred power to the government. of the new patriotic party.
In 2000, Mahama was re-elected for another four-year term as MP for the Bole / Bamboi constituency.
He was re-elected in 2004 for a third term. From 2001 to 2004, Mahama was Parliamentary Critic for Minority Communications. In 2002, he was appointed Director of Communications for NDC. The same year, he was a member of the team of international observers selected to monitor
Parliamentary elections in Zimbabwe.
As a Member of Parliament, he has been a member of the Rules Committee, as well as the Transportation, Industry, Energy, Communications, Science and Technology Committee.
Mahama was Deputy Minister of Communications from April 1997 to November 1998.
During his term as Minister of Communications, Mahama was also President of the National Communications Authority, where he played a key role in stabilizing Ghana's telecommunications sector following its deregulation in 1997.
As a Minister, he was a founding member of the Ghana AIDS Commission, a member of the Implementation Committee of the 2000 National Population Census and Vice-Chair of the Advertising Committee charged with the reintroduction of the Value Added Tax. (VAT).
Continuing to develop interest and commitment in international affairs, Mahama became a member of the Pan-African Parliament in 2003, chairing the West African Caucus until 2011.
He has also been a member of the ad hoc committee on cooperation between European and Pan-African parliaments.
In 2005, he was also appointed Foreign Affairs Critic for the minority. He is a member of the UNDP Advisory Committee on Conflict Resolution in Ghana.
On January 7, 2009, Mahama became Vice President of Ghana.
He has also served as Chairman of the National Economic Management Team, the Ghana Armed Forces Council, the Decentralization and Implementation Committee, and the Ghana Police Council.
In accordance with Ghana's constitution, Mahama became president of Ghana on July 24, 2012 after the death of his predecessor, John Atta Mills.
In July 2012, he became the first President of Ghana to hold positions at all levels of government (Ghanaian and Pan-African MP, Deputy Minister, Minister, Vice President and President).
John Mahama is currently running for the NDC flag-bearer position with eleven others. Many political experts consider him the right person to lead the party until the 2020 general election.
The presidential primaries of the party are scheduled for January 19, 2019.
