The Democratic National Congress of Opposition hopes that the Supreme Court will force the Electoral Commission to reconsider its choice of registration centers for the next restricted registration exercise.
The EC has suspended the planned exercise from 7 to 27 June on a Supreme Court's request for a Supreme Court injunction.
A resident of Daboya, in the Savanna region, sued the Attorney General and the EC, arguing that the proceedings would remove the right to vote from eligible voters and that they are unconstitutional.
Sending to Citi News, Peter Boamah Otukonnor, Deputy Secretary General of the NDC, said that in his view, the judges who will hear the case will take into account concerns related to a possible disaffection.
"We very much hope that the courts of our country and the judges who will sit in this case will take into account the concerns of people who do not want to be deprived of their rights and will make the right decision …"
The EC suspended the 2019 voter registration restricted exercise until further notice.
It follows an application filed by a private citizen, Umar Ayuba, in the Supreme Court, for an injunction to prevent the Electoral Commission from proceeding with the limited registration of voters, which was to start from June 7th to 27th.
This particular injunction follows an action brought by the same individual to challenge the EC's decision to maintain registration in its district offices and in certain electoral zones.
In an EC statement, they stated that the suspension had become necessary pending the final decision of the trial.
"The Electoral Commission wishes to announce for the information of the general that, given the pending injunction to prevent the Commission from holding the registration exercise on limited voters scheduled from 7 to 27 June 2019, the next registration exercise was suspended until further notice. "
He further indicated that a new date would be announced later.
"The Commission will announce a new date shortly. Any inconvenience is deeply regretted, "the statement added.
