All is not well in Westview.
Like a hedge trimmer on a cement wall, WandaVisionThe January 22 episode, titled “Now in Color,” really started to crumble to the pleasant sitcom veneer of the Disney + series. From the baffling yard work of neighbor Herb to the intrusion of a stubborn stork, to the upside down upheaval that Wanda and Vision’s house went through as the birth of the twins drew closer to Agnes’ concerns about Geraldine without ” house ”, there were more signs than ever that something was wrong in these suburbs.
The character of “Geraldine” (as everyone knows her so far) was there for the biggest nod to a specific MCU storyline, as new mom Wanda remembered her dearly deceased twin – after which Geraldine pointed out that Pietro was killed by Ultron. This moment of sharing seemed to trigger something in Wanda, who began to question her girlfriend’s identity. The next thing we know, Vision comes home to find Geraldine suddenly absent, as viewers see the character tumbling down through some sort of digital ‘membrane’ surrounding what we know to be Westview, landing near a camp. military installed outside the perimeter.
“The first two episodes of WandaVision are very specific to the period and to the sitcoms, ”notes Teyonah Parris, who plays Geraldine. “And what’s interesting about these first two episodes is that you make feel that something is wrong, something is wrong. Many characters take note of this; the characters can’t remember things, they can’t really put their finger on a thing. “
As suggested by the jarring final sequence, the mystery of what really goes on here – including, presumably, where Wanda and possibly Vision (who of course died Infinity war) really are, and why – will only escalate over the next six episodes.
“Watching all of this unfold and then end up later in the series is going to be a real adventure,” says Parris. “And I hope you all listen and ride with us because it will be worth it. I know there are so many questions in the first two episodes, and no answers, but we’ll get there, I promise.
An answer that seems imminent – and here we throw up again SPOILER ALERT, even though Marvel Studios announced it in July 2019 – is the truth about who Geraldine is. This means that Parris is actually playing Monica Rambeau, as in the grown-up daughter of Captain MarvelUS Air Force pilot Maria Rambeau. And judging by the pendant Geraldine wore, Monica works for (or at least is an asset of) SWORD aka the galactic version of SHIELD.
Anticipating this upcoming role change, Parris told TVLine, “For Monica Rambeau, I definitely pulled from the comics and Akira Akbar’s performance in Captain Marvel. I was trying to see not only what Akira was doing, but also what young Monica’s relationship was with her mother, Maria Rambeau (played by Lashana Lynch) and with Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) – the influences Monica could have learned from . these relationships. It was definitely part of my personal process to play Monica.
Alas, the franchise of Parris to talk about his WandaVision character (who will also appear in Captain Marvel 2) ends there. “That’s about all I can say about Monica until you’ve all seen more,” the actress shrugged, smiling. (With reporting by Rebecca Iannucci)
