SWORD
SWORD’s introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe opens up a galaxy of storytelling possibilities. From what we know so far, SWORD was at least partially “built from scratch” by Maria Rambeau, likely after being inspired by all the alien weirdness she witnessed firsthand. Captain Marvel. His daughter Monica was a rising star in the organization, having already reached the rank of captain, before getting lost in “the blip”.
While SHIELD was a government organization focused primarily on Earth threats, SWORD looks beyond our planet’s borders, with an eye on protecting Earth from the next Thanos-level cosmic threat. That’s about all we know so far, but Monica and the mysterious director of SWORD, Hayward, discuss an emerging ‘astronaut training program’ that SWORD is developing. Apparently things didn’t go well, with participants washing up or losing their temper before they could complete the program.
The original Fantastic Four story of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm was presented not only as astronauts, but as astronauts willing to take the greatest possible risks to get to space. Why? Well, that was the height of the Cold War, and the only way the quartet could make sure it was good old-fashioned red-blooded Americans who beat the commies in the space race was to fly an experimental rocket and pilot it themselves.
There’s also a mysterious rocket being built in the background during Monica and Director Hayward’s little chat. Maybe whatever is under construction here is what will eventually take the team to space. Maybe they will increase because they truly are the best and bravest the MCU has to offer. Or maybe it will be a group of scientists who don’t trust Hayward’s motives and steal the rocket to make sure the data collected is put to good use. Either way, don’t be surprised if the first time we meet Reed Richards in the MCU, he’s working for SWORD.
THE UNIFORMS
SWORD appears to have an official color scheme of blue, black and white. You can see it pretty much everywhere in SWORD HQ. It’s pretty cool Fantastic Four to start with.
