The penultimate episode of WandaVision is all about Wanda Maximoff, embracing the show’s broad themes of trauma and grief. Agatha desperately to learn how Wanda has achieved such incredible magical feats, she forces the Scarlet Witch to take an excursion through the most traumatic moments of her life. Since her introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Wanda has always been a character with a lot of baggage, but the films haven’t fully delved into her trauma; however, the Disney + series does just that, starting with the death of its parents.

The bombing of Wanda and Pietro’s apartment
As explained in Avengers: Age of Ultron, the Maximoff twins lost their parents when a Stark missile demolished their apartment, killing their parents in the process. While Wanda and Pietro survived, they were stranded in the apartment for two days, waiting for the second bomb to explode.
Before this traumatic event, the family loved to watch The Dick Van Dyke Show, despite the ongoing war outside their window. Watching American sitcoms and practicing English seemed like a weekly tradition for the Maximoffs, but that tradition tragically ended when the bomb hit the apartment, meaning that Wanda’s last positive memory of her parents is soon followed. by one of his most traumatic memories. This is also where Wanda first exhibits magical abilities, unintentionally using a probability hex; however, she assumed the bomb had not exploded because it was faulty.
The Hydra experiments on the Maximoff twins
After this event, the twins radicalized, wanting to make a difference in the world, and Hydra promised them exactly that. Volunteers with the terrorist organization, Wanda and Pietro have become test subjects, and they are the only two to survive the Mind Stone experiments. As seen in Episode 8, Wanda is the first of the twins to be experienced.
As she approaches Loki’s scepter, the Mind Stone floats towards her before projecting an enormous amount of energy, giving her a vision of the Scarlet Witch and presumably enhancing her magical powers. After that, she passed out, recovering in her cell later while watching more sitcoms. Based on her living quarters – which are reminiscent of a prison cell – as well as the state of fatigue she finds herself in, it is clear that her experience with Hydra was a nightmare, which she still regrets today. .
Vision comforts Wanda About Pietro
Instead of revisiting Pietro’s death, which she hadn’t been around for since battling Ultron’s robots, the next memory is of her mourning her brother in the Avengers Compound, having fun with Malcolm in the middle. Vision, worried about Wanda, enters her room to try to comfort her. At first, Wanda thinks the only thing that could comfort her is Pietro.
Despite this, she opens up to Vision, explaining how it feels like drowning in grief, but he assures us that she will survive. He also mentions how heartbreak is the persevering love before deciding to enjoy the sitcom with her. This moment brings Wanda back and establishes why she and Vision work so well together, with Wanda finally having someone in the Avengers treat her like a human, not a hero or a villain.
Wanda confronts the sword
Wanda’s most recent memory is when she entered SWORD to retrieve Vision’s body, but Hayward previously distorted this moment, claiming that Wanda had stolen Vision. In fact, she just asked to see him and give him a funeral; however, Hayward was not going to give up his “weapon”.
He decides to show Wanda Vision’s body, without preparing her for the state he is in. Wanda is horrified to realize that her lover has been torn to pieces, and when she mentions that he is not a weapon for them to participate, Hayward accuses her of wanting to resurrect him, even though it turns out to be Hayward’s prerogative. He also says he can’t let Wanda bury millions of dollars worth of vibranium and that he’s legally allowed to experiment on Vision.
This breaks Wanda, who shatters the glass wall behind her to get a good look at Vision, confirming that he’s long gone. Instead of taking his body, she leaves the Westview headquarters, where it is revealed that Vision has purchased land so they can build their lives together. Learning that she has lost her lover and a future with him is what ultimately shatters Wanda, leading her to create the Hex, as well as a new Vision. Revisiting those memories not only gave viewers answers to how it all started, but it explains who Wanda, a Scarlet Witch really is.
