Agatha Harkness is the villainous manipulator of WandaVision, but in the comics the character is grayer and has even been an ally of Wanda.

The seventh episode of WandaVision delivered yet another major twist. Although it is the one that comic book fans have been waiting for since the start of the series. it was always well executed and raised many new questions. When Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) ventures into the basement of her neighbor Agnes (Kathryn Hahn) in search of her twin sons, she is surprised to see a gothic and supernatural lair. Agnes walks in and teases Wanda for thinking she was the only woman with mystical powers in Westview. Agnes reveals that her real name is Agatha Harkness and that she controls various aspects of Wanda’s life, including the arrival of the still unidentified version of her brother Pietro played by Evan Peters. She then appears to cast a spell on Wanda herself, whose eyes glow with Agnes’ distinctive purple energy, implying that the immensely powerful Avenger is now herself directly under Agatha’s mind control. With Agatha set to play a major role in the series’ end game, it’s worth revisiting her comic book counterpart – especially her history with Wanda and her family.

Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Agatha first appeared in The Fantastic Four # 94 in 1970. She worked as a tutor for Reed Richards and Sue Storm’s son, Franklin. When the Frightful Four attempted to kidnap him, she had to use her powers to fight them, revealing herself as a witch. Agatha is thousands of years old, having referred to her memories of a time before the sinking of Atlantis. In the 17th century, she established a community of witches in Salem, Massachusetts, which was persecuted during the notorious Salem Witch Trials. Agatha actually approved of the trials because she believed they would help eliminate weak members of her community and even sent some of her closest followers to help with the slaughter. But the mutant Firestar, who has been moved in time, begged Agatha to use less violent methods. She eventually agreed and moved her followers to the secret community of New Salem in what would become Colorado.
After her encounters with the Fantastic Four, Agatha became Wanda’s mentor, training her to exercise greater control over her mystical powers. When Agatha’s evil son, Nicholas Scratch, and his grandchildren, the Salem Seven, conquered New Salem, they burned Agatha at the stake. Her astral form survived, however, and advised Wanda in her battle with the Seven, in which the energy of the entire fellowship was absorbed by one of the Seven, who quickly lost control of them. Wanda absorbed some of this power and, with the guidance of the Astral Agatha, used it to create children for herself and her husband, the Vision. Agatha would later come to life without an explanation. When Mephisto revealed that Wanda’s sons were in fact created using fragments of her soul, Agatha erased Wanda’s memories of the incident to spare her pain, but was ultimately forced to restore them. Years later, after Wanda temporarily lost her children’s memory again, she confronted Agatha about them. Shortly after, Nick Fury found Agatha’s corpse in his house. As a result, Agatha often appeared as a ghost and worked with Wanda and the spirit of her mother, Natalya Maximoff, to fight an embodiment of chaos. When Natalya sacrificed herself, Agatha found her life, after which she began to work with the Daughters of Freedom.
While she’s a bit of a gray character in terms of morality in the comics, the sheer nature of Agatha from the Marvel Cinematic Universe in WandaVision is a significant change, which could lead to some controversy with fans. However, with two episodes remaining, there’s still a chance that Agatha could be made a little more likable. Most viewers assume that there is yet another, more dangerous evil force at work in the series, with most speculation and foreshadowing pointing to either Mephisto, Nightmare, or a hybrid of the two as Wanda’s true enemy. , with Agatha as the only disciple, perhaps even involuntary. Regardless, Hahn’s performance was universally praised and it’s clear Marvel Studios has big plans for Agatha Harkness.
