Warning after measles from a North Ayrshire student

A warning was sent to parents after a high school student in North Ayrshire contracted measles.

The student from the St Matthew Academy in Saltcoats attended school while he was infected with the virus.

NHS Ayrshire and Arran said he had been in contact with his relatives and had offered him vaccines, if any.

The school is already using the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine extensively, health officials said.

NHS spokesperson Ayrshire and Arran said: "We have written to parents and caregivers attending this school to give them information about the symptoms of measles and what to do in case symptoms.

"MMR vaccine uptake is high in St Matthew's Academy, which reduces the risk of measles spread."

"Our public health team plans to go to school to offer MMR vaccination to any child who needs it, to prevent continued spread within the school."
