MARIETTA OH, (WTAP) – The Washington County Department of Health has stated that bacterial toxins from E. coli may be present in many types of foods. They also say that health officials have struggled to identify the exact cause of the outbreak.

Hand washing, careful cooking, and proper food preparation are some of the best things you can do to protect yourself.

"The last time I heard about it, there were 72 confirmed cases. Half of these are in Kentucky and 5 in Ohio and I think they're mostly centered on the Cincinnati area, so I would not like to cause a lot of panic at the idea to be exposed here, but the end result is that we do not know what causes it and that means that there will probably be more cases, "said Richard Wittberg, county health commissioner from Washington.

If you have symptoms of E. Coli such as stomach cramps, vomiting and severe diarrhea, seek immediate medical attention.
