Jan. 12 (UPI) – Amazon released a trailer for its original film Congratulated Tuesday. Owen Wilson and Salma Hayek star in the sci-fi movie.
Greg (Wilson) meets Isabel (Hayek) in a bar. Isabel tells Greg his world isn’t real and she teaches him how to drop a tray from a waiter’s hands, or light and extinguish candles with their minds.
Isobel awakens Greg to his world where it is revealed that she is Dr Isobel Clemens, the inventor of brain box simulations. Its premise is that simulating ugly and gritty worlds will make people appreciate the true utopia they live in.
Greg begins to grapple with his two realities when Isabel starts telling him to ignore his fake daughter (Nesta Cooper).
Reality simulations are a popular subject in science fiction. The most popular example was The matrix, in which computers have enslaved humanity in a simulation of modern society.
The film Total recall, based on a story by Philip K. Dick, posed a memory implant so believable that the recipient would not be able to distinguish it from actual experiences.
Mike Cahill wrote and directed Congratulated. Cahill’s two previous films premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and dealt with science fiction themes.
2011 Another land dealt with the discovery of a parallel planet discovered in our orbit. 2014 I Origins speaks of a scientist whose research leads him to a possible proof of reincarnation.
Congratulated premieres February 5 on Amazon Prime.
