Dave Grohl explained the story behind the creation of the Foo Fighters classic ‘Everlong’ at Oates Song Fest 7908 this weekend, and the video is now available to watch back.
The Oates Fest, hosted by John Oates of Hall & Oates and his wife Aimee Oates to raise awareness and fundraise for Feeding America, took place on Saturday March 20.
After sharing the story of the song’s birth, Grohl duly performed an acoustic solo version of the 1997 hit.

In the 11-minute video, now available on YouTube after last weekend’s festival, Grohl explained how he hit what would become the intro to “Everlong” when he started strumming “a cool chord from Sonic. Youth ”.
He recalls, “I recorded the song and brought it back to the guys. I actually remember playing it for Thurston from Sonic Youth because I was totally scared that I had ripped that song from Sonic Youth somehow. And I said, ‘Listen to what I just recorded, listen to this demo that I just did. He said, ‘Why is this a demo? Why isn’t it on the album?
“It felt so improvised and unofficial to me that I considered it a demo. So we went and we re-recorded it and that’s the song you hear on the radio today.
Grohl added that he “never considered doing [‘Everlong’] acoustically, ”explaining,“ I thought it was a rock song. I think it was maybe the first time we were doing The Howard Stern. Howard Stern loved the song. And when you do Howard Stern’s show, it’s 6 am and you don’t want to touch an instrument but he asked me to play it acoustically.
“And that’s what I did, and in a way, it gave the song a whole new rebirth. It was long after his release. It gave the song a whole new life. Because I think sometimes when I do it that way (acoustically) it really peels some of the bells and whistles and other noises when it’s just the lyrics and the guitar and my vocals. I think it gives the song the feeling I’ve always wanted.
Elsewhere, the BBC announced this month that Dave Grohl will be giving a career interview for his series Reel Stories.
The show will see Grohl discuss his rich career, from his time as a drummer in Nirvana to his years as frontman of the Foo Fighters. It will air on BBC Two on March 27 and will be followed by the entire 2019 Foo Fighters Reading Festival in full.
Foo Fighters released their new album “Medicine At Midnight” in February.
