The family of former President Jerry John Rawlings said they would welcome any decision to name the University of Development Studies (UDS) after him.

The comment follows a visit by a delegation from the university, led by its vice-chancellor, Professor Gabriel Ayum Teye, to the late Rawlings residence to sympathize with the family.

“We quickly checked with His Excellency and I have his authority to inform you that the family has never been against this prospective suggestion and we would have absolutely no objection to your university being able to achieve this,” a member said. family and former diplomat, Victor Gbeho, told the group.

The debate over the school’s name change after the former head of state was reintroduced by President Akufo-Addo when he addressed UDS worshipers at a handover ceremony graduation ceremony at Tamale on November 14.

According to the president, although Mr. Rawlings had previously declined the offer to have the school named after him, he deserves to be commended for his immense role in establishing the school.

But this has been opposed by some people and organizations, including the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), who argue that the former president never wanted the school to bear his name and that his last wishes should be honored.

But responding to the family’s position, the school’s vice-chancellor Professor Gabriel Ayum Teye said the family’s support had been noted and any government decision would be welcomed by the leadership of the institution.

“We have already given our blessing,” he added.
