Head of Public Affairs of the Ghana Immigration Service, Supt. Michael Amoako Atta
The Ghanaian immigration service borrows arms to be able to exercise its functions with the state, revealed the chief of public affairs of the service.
According to Supt. Michael Amoako Atta, even though the law governing their operations has been revised to allow them to carry weapons, the weapons are not available for their use.
Speaking during the Alert broadcast with host Adam Bonah on Starr FM on Tuesday, the Supt. Amoako Atta said the situation made it difficult for them to protect borders and drive illegal immigrants out of the country.
"Even though the law has been changed to allow us to use weapons, these weapons are not there. We borrowed some from other agencies.
"The process of buying weapons is a bit tedious. But the government has badured us that the buying process has ended. The weapons will come in September, "he said.
The revelations come at a time when the border between Ghana and Burkina Faso is boiling because of the chaos that reigns in this country.
The immigration service is responsible for meeting all the needs of the country's relations with non-citizens. The functions of the service are: to create favorable environments, through the establishment of regulatory frameworks facilitating the entry, stay and employment of foreigners in Ghana.
