The Medical and Dental Council seems helpless in its efforts to shut down the Obengfo Hospital and prevent its owner, Dr. Dominic Obengfo Andoh, from operating illegally.

According to the Commission, several attempts, including repeatedly locking down the facility, were not enough to stop its operations.

A circuit court had previously fired Dr. Obenfo on the grounds of "the absence of prosecution" after he had been tried for operating an unlicensed health facility.

Dr. E.K Atikpui, Clerk of the Council, told Citi News that his team could only warn the public to stop attending the health center.

"We went back to the police when we learned that the institution had become operational regardless of whether it was shut down. We went with them to make this institution closed again. We went for the third time. Unfortunately, the Medical and Dental Council is not an agency charged with law enforcement. That's why we did our part in helping the police to ensure that the facility is closed. "

"For some reason, an individual who is supposed to have been registered by the Medical and Dental Council decides to do it himself. We have reported to the competent authorities. Now, if for whatever reason, steps are taken or not, the best way to proceed for us is to warn Ghanaians that they are going there to receive medical care at their own risk, " he added.

Context

Dr. Obeng-Andoh was the subject of an investigation following the alleged death of the Deputy Director General of the National Entrepreneurship Innovation Program (NEIP), Stacy Offei Darko, in her medical establishment.

According to the mother of the deceased, Nana Akosua Animah, her 37-year-old daughter fell ill and sought medical attention at Obengfo Hospital, but died after her admission.

In January 2017, the medical and dental council closed the Obengfo hospital for its illegal operation.

This was the second lawsuit the company was facing after the board revoked for the first time Dr. Obeng-Andoh's 2013 license for illegal logging.

Dr. Obeng-Andoh was arrested in December 2016 on the same topic after the Dental and Medical Council said that he had received several complaints from some people who attended the school.

According to the Board, Dr. Obeng-Andoh endangers the lives of his patients, hence the decision to stop his operations.
