The creation of new constituencies has not yet been examined by the Electoral Commission (EC), said its president, Jean Mensa.

She refuted this claim during an interview with reporters in Parliament on Monday, saying that "it's a total lie." It was not raised.

"We've seen reports in the public domain and we can say for sure that this is not coming from the commission. The committee has not met to consider this issue, although this issue is on its agenda. But these figures and the information provided are not true. "

"I'm sure nothing prevents the commission from considering or creating new constituencies, but this issue is not on our agenda. Although the mandate of the commission is to create new ridings, it is not something we are dealing with right now. "

Some media reported that the government was urging the EC to create 25 new constituencies before the 2020 elections.

The claims, coming from a minority MP, indicated that the government wanted to create 17 new constituencies in its stronghold in the Ashanti region.

Jean Mensa, however, noted that the creation of new constituencies was a problem that the commission was aware of but had not discussed it.

She stated that the commission was conducting an evaluation "and when we have completed our badessment, we will know [if we need to create new regions]. "

Article 47 (5) of the 1992 Constitution mandates the EC "to review the division of Ghana into constituencies at least seven years later, or within 12 months of the publication of the enumeration figures after a census of the Ghana, whichever comes first, which could, therefore, change constituencies ".

The EC, in 2012, has increased the number of constituencies from 230 to 275 currently.

The Ashanti region, being the largest region, had 47 constituencies, followed by the Greater Accra region, with 37 constituencies.
