The National Democratic Congress (NDC), the main opposition party, rejected the Election Commission's proposal to set up a new electoral register for the 2020 elections.

The Electoral Commission has notified that a new register of voters will be established before the presidential and legislative elections of 2020.

The election management body is currently inspecting the offices of political parties, according to a press release issued after the meeting of the Inter-party Advisory Committee (IPAC) on Wednesday.

The call for a new voters list was launched before the 2016 elections, which culminated in a series of Let's Vote Count events. However, due to financial constraints, the EC did not respond to the call.

After meeting with stakeholders on the issue, the EC said that a new registry would be used for the next general election.

Addressing Francis Abban on Thursday morning in Starr, NDC election director Bede-Zieding said that the question of a new voter had just been raised at the time of the meeting. an IPAC meeting by the President of the EC without concrete deliberation.

He stated that the party would oppose any attempt by the EC to advance the idea of a new register, as there are not enough grounds for it. to create a.

"The NDC does not support the proposal to develop a new electoral register to replace the new one. We are not in favor of establishing a new electoral register because there is not enough reason to do so. "

"The law states that a new registry must be created on the basis of a census and that there is no new census. Secondly, the law says that the existing registry should have been 10 years or more before a new one can be created and that it will be 10 years in 2020, so that it will not be possible. there is no basis for creating a new one, "he said.
