We do not tell lies – CODEO responds to EC

The National Election Observer Coalition (CODEO) denied the Election Commission's (EC) claims that its preliminary report on the by-election in Ayawaso West Wuogon's constituency was full of falsehoods.

At a press conference, the chairman of the Commission accused the CODEO of wrongly charging officers and security personnel deployed to monitor the by-elections on Thursday.

CODEO had criticized the Commission for the low participation rate of the presence of masked men at the polling station and the violence that characterized the voting process.

But the EC says that they can not be held responsible for the alleged violence that took place.

Jean Mensa said: "On the allegation of shootings in the La Bawaleshie region, the Commission rejects the attempts of the CODEO report to bind the electoral commission to the alleged incident in the candidate's private residence in parliament of the NDC.

"The Commission wishes to point out that the shooting did not take place in any of the polling stations in the constituency and therefore did not in any way disturb the conduct of the poll."

The EC also stated that the story of a police officer in a Roman Ridge polling center allegedly badaulted by CODEO is also false.

Albert Arhin, CODEO's national coordinator, speaking on Joy FM's Top Story, said the EC's response to their initial report was unfortunate.

He added that CODEO could not have included in his report an incident that would not have occurred at the voting center.

"In elections, you can not be in the same place every time … you move from one place to another and sometimes, as you move, something happens. It should not therefore dispute the fact that [badault on police officer] come.

"This should not be disputed at all. We train our staff and ask them to report accurately. If that were not said, we would not have said so in our report, "he added.

Mr. Arhin stated that some things had gone wrong during the polls and that their appeal was for the EC to review them to ensure that they will not be repeated in the next election. .

He denied that their report badociates the EC with the La Bawaleshie shootings. He stated that it was impossible for CODEO to comment on or link the EC to the incident, while no one of its staff was present at the scene.

"Something has gone wrong somewhere and all we are saying is that in the future, the EC should investigate and determine why these events have occurred as well. I saw polling stations where guns were fired and people were running around the clock.

"And in the election administration, these things do not happen because voters are going to be intimidated and that they will not come from where they came from," Arhin said.

He believes that this development explains the low voter turnout (19.33%), stressing that it was necessary to remind the EC these issues in order to address them.

"CODEO remains faithful to the observers' report, we do not tell lies," he said.
