A marriage counselor questioned the durability of marriages contracted on the basis of "love at first sight".
Smart Takyi says that love is not a feeling but a character.
"It's good to have a feeling, but what triggers it in the first place? If the character is not correct, then what do you fall in love with? He was speaking at the Joy FM Super Morning Show on Friday.
According to Takyi, it takes character for the marriage to work.
Smart Takyi is the main coordinator of RAPID Ghana UK
Defining love from the perspective of the scriptures, he said that true love, according to 1 Corinthians 13, was patient and kind.
This is not everything.
The main coordinator of RAPID Ghana UK adds that love does not envy, he does not boast, he is not proud. It's not rude, it's not self-searching, it's not easy to get angry and it does not keep track of wrongs.
He argues that any love that is not based on these demonstrable attributes is a coincidence.
Available statistics indicate that marriages fail.
The archives of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, between 2006 and 2013, show that a total of 4,080 divorce cases were recorded in Accra alone.
According to the Ghana Living Standards Survey, Series 6 (GLSS6, page 8), divorced and separated persons accounted for 5.6% of the population over the 2008-2013 census period. This figure was higher in rural coastal areas (4.3%) than in Accra (3.6%, 2.3% in 2008) or in other urban centers (3.9%).
But Smart Takyi attributed these developments to a misunderstanding of what constitutes love in future couples.
He says that when difficult moments occur in a relationship, it takes a good character to overcome them, because "love never fails".
But not with the marriage of feelings and emotions.
No one can resist an abusive relationship, an unfaithful partner, and a bad and doubtful character.
According to Smart Takyi, even God can not stand the negative character despite his loving nature.
"The spirit of God can be afflicted. And those who mourn the spirit of God can extinguish it or lose its presence. "
