Ghana is expected to receive around 16.9 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine.
This was revealed by the Director General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, during the launch of the Service’s new website on Friday.
The Ghana Health Service began the immunization exercise with the 177,600 doses of Johnson & Johnson vaccine received on August 7 at selected hot spots in the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions on Friday August 13.
Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye explained that this shipment of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is part of the first batch of the African Vaccine Acquisition Trust (AVAT) of the African Union.
“This is just the first of many installments to arrive. This is a vaccine that is shared around the world. We know that for J&J our stock of what we have secured is around 16.9 million doses.
“They would come from time to time and very soon we would get a few more installments,” he said. JoyNews.
He said the Service wanted to target people at higher risk of contracting the virus with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
According to him, “we are now also trying to see how to break our transmission and that is why we are still focusing on Accra and Kumasi. [because] for those in communities where we have high transmission, we want to protect them. “
“We target the entire population based on the segmentation we have. We focus initially on the vulnerable, the oldest, ”he added.
Meanwhile, Dr Kuma-Aboagye has hinted that the government will take delivery of AstraZeneca vaccines in early September.
“Early next month we will have AstraZeneca for the second dose. The arrival of vaccines does not depend only on the Ghana Health Service but it depends on the supplier, on the availability of transport to bring it here.
“When all of these things are in place, we get to know the arrival date. We should have AstraZeneca next month, ”he revealed.
