An organization calling itself LGBT + Rights Ghana has denied claims in the media that the Australian High Commission was behind raising funds for office space for them in the country.
He said he would not also disclose the location of his offices in the country.
LGBT + Rights Ghana organized a fundraiser for a new community space in Accra on January 31, 2021.
Participants in the fundraiser included the Australian High Commissioner to Ghana, His Excellency Gregory Andrews; and Danish Ambassador Tom Nørring among some EU delegates.
In a statement, LGBT + Rights Ghana said: “The narrative in the public sphere that the Australian High Commission funded community space is totally false.”
“The High Commissioner was invited as a guest, as were other guests who graced the occasion, such as the Danish Ambassador and EU delegates, among others,” adding that: “Their support and solidarity with our cause is one that LGBT + rights Ghana values very much ”.
The statement further noted, “Contrary to false information disseminated by myjoyonline.com, the US Ambassador was not present at the event.
“Although we are currently withholding the location of our community space for the physical safety of our members, it is also wrong to say that we are located in Tesano.”
The organization therefore warned the Ghanaian media against false reporting, taking into account “the physical and mental safety and security of target groups” such as the LGBT + community.
“For the physical and mental safety of the targeted groups, the Ghanaian media are encouraged to obtain their facts from credible sources and to adhere to the best tactics necessary to cover issues concerning oppressed minority groups,” the statement said.
