Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) Western Regional Manager Mac-Doe Hanyabui said weak transmission pipelines continue to pose a major challenge to water supply in metropolitan Sekondi-Takoradi and in the region in general.

He indicated that the Company cannot do continuous water pumping for a week without having problems on the lines following frequent breaks on them, which makes it difficult to serve the population well.

Mr. Hanyabui who said this on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the annual conference of delegates of the GWCL Women’s Association in Takoradi, and pointed out that due to the inadequacies in communication with customers with the water, some were reluctant to pay their bills, making it difficult to deliver efficient and effective services.

So he begged the clients of the company who were in arrears to make an effort to settle their debts, while all clients had to make prompt payments to enable the company to serve them well.

He said the region has five operational districts namely Takoradi North, Takoradi South, Sekondi, Tarkwa and Axim with a total customer base of 40,191 and an average monthly private collection of 3,637,663 GHc.

The regional manager said the company operated with nine water supply systems consisting of four conventional surface water systems and five groundwater systems.

Mr Hanyabui said the demand for water in the city’s operational area far exceeds supply due to population growth associated with aging factories – the Daboase plant, which was built in 1969, while the Inchaban factory was built in 1914 with no major expansion works since they were built.
