Japan 1-0 Saudi Arabia
Sharjah Stadium, Sharjah
While Japan lacked clear opportunities in opening, it ensured that its strike rate was unmatched. Takehiro Tomiyasu headed for his first goal of the Samurai Blue. Saudi Arabia was largely limited to remote efforts, with Hatan Bahbri causing the blood pressure of Suhuichi Gonda to rise with a superb effort that resulted in a width of a few centimeters.
Juan Antonio Pizzi's team struggling to solve the problem after the break, Japan was offered an opportunity, but its clinical nature had abandoned them. Bahbri and Ali Hadi Albulayhi missed out on their clearest chance to upgrade as the Japanese bottom line remained firm against steady pressure, performing an intriguing test against Vietnam in the quarterfinals.
Australia 0-0 Uzbekistan (4-2 PSO)
Khalifa bin Zayed stadium, Al Ain
The defending champions took the time to wake up during this last meeting and Uzbekistan almost made them pay. Eldor Shomurodov nearly pocketed his fifth of the tournament after beating the back of the Socceroos, but Mathew Ryan concealed his angles. Javokhir Sidikov's efforts left the watchman at bay, but whistled close.
After the break, Australia rediscovered its joie de vivre, swinging the Uzbeks on the back foot after surviving the previous badault. The introduction of Mathew Leckie allowed Graham Arnold's party to add a dose of incision as they left, but additional time has pbaded since they could not open the lock. Neither team was an obvious opportunity in the last 30 minutes, so Ryan had two saves in the shootout – his first for the national team – before Leckie scored the winner.
United Arab Emirates 3-2 Kyrgyz Republic
Zayed Sports City Stadium, Abu Dhabi
We can say that the best was saved for the end of the day as the hosts faced a tough beginner against Kyrgyzstan starting in a dramatic return match. Khamis Esmaeel opened the scoring with his head just a quarter of an hour after the start of the match, but Mirlan Murzaev tied for the Central Asians to score their first goal in the playoff phase of the competition's history .
Ali Mabkhout brought the hosts back in the middle of the second half, beating Kyrgyz keeper Kutman Kadyrbekov. Since the start of the tournament in 2015, Mabkhout has scored nine goals in his ten matches of the Asian Cup for the UAE. At the very moment when it seemed that the UAE had solved the problem, Tursunali Rustamov had other ideas in mind. He equalized by the head, in stoppage of game, to extend the match to the match. Ahmed Khalil converted the winning goal from the penalty spot just before the extra-time break to allow hosts to prepare for a quarterfinal match with Australia.
