BOULDER CITY (FOX5) – The first mosquitoes infected with West Nile virus have been located in the Las Vegas Valley, the Southern Nevada Health District announced on Monday.
According to SNHD, mosquitoes were found in the postcode 89005 in Boulder City.
The Southern Nevada Health District reported its first human case of West Nile virus in Clark County in 2019 on Friday.
The first human case of West Nile was reported by the SNHD in April. According to the SNHD, no cases were reported in Clark County last year.
"We know that West Nile virus and other mosquito-borne diseases are at higher risk in southern Nevada during this time of year," said Dr. Joe Iser, chief of health for the SNHD, in a statement. "I encourage everyone to take appropriate precautions to do their part to ensure that their homes are free of standing water, to use an insect repellent appropriately and to report mosquito activity to our home." agency."
SNHD had the following recommendations for preventing mosquito bites and eliminating breeding sources:
- Use EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) approved insect repellents containing DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, lemon eucalyptus oil (OLE) or 2-undecanone.
- Wear long pants and long sleeved shirts to reduce the exposure of mosquitoes to the outdoors.
- Eliminate areas of stagnant water around your home, including ponds that are not flowing,
- "Green" pools and accumulated runoff sprinklers favoring mosquito breeding.
