The West Regional Director of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Nana Akua Ansah, announced that 20 people died in January 2021 as a result of road accidents in the western region.
According to her, in 2020 during the same period, a total of fourteen deaths were recorded as a result of road accidents.
She said of the 20 people who died, 18 were men and two were women.
Nana Ansah said 155 traffic accidents were recorded in the month of January 2021 alone.
The regional director who made this known in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said fifty-seven commercial vehicles were involved in the crashes, with a total of forty-one motorcycles also recording crashes against 44 in 2020.
She said around 47 private vehicles were involved in various forms of accidents in January 2021 compared to 72 in 2020.
In addition, she said the Authority recorded 31 fatal traffic accident cases in 2021 compared to 39 last year.
Nana Ansah said that in January alone, 57 commercial cars were involved in traffic accidents compared to 82 last year at the same time.
Ms Ansah therefore advised drivers and other road users to observe road safety rules when using the roads.
Subsequently, she noted that the majority of recorded accidents were largely attributed to drivers and stressed that road accidents could only be reduced when drivers were careful on the road.
