Now that Scarlett Johansson is probably running the Black Widow independent film, two questions arise: will this film look forward or backward? And will any of the other Avengers join her?
The film is likely to be a sequel, unless Marvel exceeds time travel or any other mystical magic. SPOILER: Natasha gave her life Avengers: End of the game so that the team can recover the stone of the soul – the same that led to the death of Gamora in War of Infinity.
So, will his friends from Marvel Cinematic Universe join her? We guess no. The film will almost certainly come back to the character's origins, which have never been shown before, and the other Avengers are just not part of this story. But we could be wrong. Marvel surprised us before.
Why "Black Widow" will probably be a solo movie
Unlike most other Avengers, Black Widow has no supernatural or high-tech origin: Iron Man had all his Tony Stark Toys, Captain America had his super serum and the Hulk had his gamma accident, and Thor nothing less than a god.
The only one of the 2012 team Avengers Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), similar to Natasha, is also an experienced fighter who does not rely on the superpowers and who usually avoids high tech weapons. That's why, if an avenger joins her in the new movie, it will most likely be Clint. Not only are they similar stylistically, but Clint was with her when she died End of Game. So, even if they opt little for the future, Hawkeye would be his most likely partner.
If the solo film continues, it would imply a resurrection and this kind of event from another world would be in contradiction with the brutal and realistic style of Black Widow. Natasha was not inclined to share the details of her past. That's why a film that reveals its origins has the most potential, and why the other Avengers will probably not be part of his film.
How other Avengers might appear
We can see a way that the MCU could pull a sequel to Black Widow. Spider-Man trailer: July's Far from Home specifically mentions multi-verse, like the one Sony has so successfully rolled out Spider-Man: in the Spider-Verse, who won an Oscar for the best animated feature film. It's a way to bring back Natasha without resorting to the advanced solutions that Dr. Strange and her friends would imagine.
On the other hand, we have never really seen Natasha alone. Whenever we see her, she has always struggled with other Avengers or by helping other team members in their solo movies. The MCU introduced the character into The Iron Man 2, and after The Avengers, she helped Steve Rogers to Captain: America: Winter Soldier, one of the most terrestrial movies among all MCUs.
One of the reasons the film worked so well was that it played as a paranoid thriller of the 1970's, even to the point of launching Robert Redford, a veteran of this kind via Three days of the condor. Black Widow fits into this genre as a glove.
Which Avengers could appear in the new movie 'Black Widow'
So, since Black Widow was a team player, let's look at the likelihood that other Avengers will join her.
Iron Man: Forget it. They have teamed once, but Tony is dead too, and it is extremely unlikely that Disney will pay millions to Robert Downey Jr. for a few days of work.
Captain America: They teamed up before, so been there, did that. Chris Evans made it clear he was finished.
Thor: His hammer would be useful, but a deity and a spy would make strange bedfellows.
Hulk: Age of Ultron flirted with a Natasha / Bruce Banner romance, but the Russians basically abandoned this idea for their Avengers films.
Hawk Eye: The only one that really makes sense, as stated above.
This is who we know is in the film, besides Johansson: Rachel Weisz, David Harbor and Florence Pugh. The release date has not been revealed, but our best estimate is next May.
