What can artificial intelligence do to our food waste?

According to the United Nations, one-third of all food produced in the world – about 1.3 billion tonnes – is lost or wasted every year. Food losses and waste generate about eight per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

The use of smart technologies can be part of the solution. The British company Winnow has developed a smart bin that uses artificial intelligence. This innovation is currently being tested and used in 100 professional kitchens, including IKEA restaurants in the UK and Ireland. The Swedish furniture brand claims to have succeeded in reducing food waste by 50% in stores using this technology.
