David Luiz revealed what he had said to his teammate Chelsea, Kepa Arrizabalaga, during his clash with manager Maurizio Sarri.
The Blues boss wanted Willy Caballero to appear in the overtime final as their Carabao Cup final with Manchester City headed for shots on goal.
However, Kepa, who had already been treated for cramps, defied orders and refused to withdraw.
Luiz tried to persuade his friend to leave the field and said, "I told him to respect the coach's decision."
However, his advice fell on deaf ears as Kepa remained on the spot but could not help them to win the shootout.
Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta said he had not seen the incident involving Kepa and Sarri.
"I'm not aware because I was on the other side of the field in this incident," he said.
Sarri insisted that it was a "misunderstanding" and stated that his goalkeeper would not be subject to any disciplinary action.
"In this situation, there was a big misunderstanding caused by the radio," he told Sky Sports. "I understood that there was a problem and that we needed a change.I did not learn it before the doctor arrived on the bench after a few minutes.
"It was a big misunderstanding, I realized that the guard had cramps and that he could not go to the penalties for me, but that the problem was not cramps, he so could go into penalties. "
